Himachal Pradesh for the Adventure Tour
Trekking
Skiing and Sporting activities
With almost three hundred well-defined trails ranging between 1500 meters and 6000 meters,
Himachal is a trekker's delight. There are day-hikes, as also trek
routes that last a couple of days or extend to weeks and can vary from
gentle walks over easy terrains to grueling expeditions. The barely
accessible valleys of Lahaul and Spiti are what mountaineers dream of.
Kinnaur, lying on the ancient trade route between India and Tibet, has a
magnificent ever- changing terrain ranging from the riotous green of
the Sangla Valley - filled with orchards of apricots, peaches, apples
and pine forests- to the splendid desolation of the Hangrang Valley. The
Kullu Valley is the starting place for a number of treks and the jagged
Ice peaks here offer excellent routes both for the expert as well as
the novice mountaineer.
The
Little hamlet of kufri is one of the oldest places in India to be
associated with skiing. Narkanda has a wide range of slopes including an
advanced slope, and a beginners' slope. The slopes here are a treat for
the cross-country skier due to their beautiful setting amidst pine and
conifer forests. The area around Solang attracts skiers to its extensive
natural slopes both during winters and summers. Skiing
possibilities are also available around the Manali region in winter and
on the slopes of the Rohtang Pass during the summers.
You
could go camping or set out on an expedition on bicycles, or experience
the thrill of Paragliding. You could also play golf at one of the oldest
golf course in India, at Naldera, also regarded as the most challenging
in the country, or take a jeep safari and drive along one of the
world's highest highways.Then there Is rock-climbing, mountaineering,
and ice skating. One could also explore the option of fishing in
Himachal's numerous streams, considered to be an anglers' paradise and
rich in world's best sports fish - Brown and Rainbow Trout
.
White
Water Rafting and others Water-Sports Water and river sports abound in
Himachal Pradesh. Year-long activities include surfing, kayaking,
rowing, canoeing, swimming,water-skiing and sailing.
The Sutlej
near Shimla, Beas near Kullu, Ravi near Chamba and Chandra in Lahaul are
a few rivers offering excellent river rafting opportunities. There are
several rivers in Himachal Pradesh which offer excellent scope for
white-water rafting and river exploration. Most of the regions are
conveniently approachable by road and infrastructure already exists.
The
Chandra river in the Lahaul and Spiti valleys provides an excellent
stretch between Khoksar and Thandi which can be run in about 5 days.
This portion is suitable for both beginners and experts. The fantastic
scenery of the steep mountain ranges forming the valley provides a
perfect setting. The white peaks smile own at the river. The sunny
weather of the valley lends its warmth and comfort as gets a drenching
from the waves. The region in also rich culturally as there are
monasteries and villages to visit, and the happy colourful and
hospitable Lahaul to explore.
The trip can be combined with
suitable treks both before and after rafting portion of the itinerary
thus making the adventure even more exciting. The region also has good
roads which assist in providing logistic support to the rafting trip.
The river can be for the better part of the year but due to the vagaries
of the weather at Rohtang Pass, the rafting season remains confined to
summer and early autumn only.
The other important river is the
Beas in the Kulu Valley. This is a short stretch but provides enough fun
and excitement for a full day's rafting. The river stretch is very
conveniently located with the main road running along the river. One can
almost set in anywhere one may fancy but the limit of this stretch is
up to Aut. Below this region one can have an excellent one day's float
trip on the calmer portion of the river upto Pandoh, This stretch,
though very tame and sedentary, has one of the most inspiring gorges to
traverse. The river can, however, be traversed through the Kangra valley
but there is little white water to be expected. A river exploration
trip on this stretch would prove interesting. These two stretches below
Pandoh and upto Bhakra Lake are suitable for river exploration.
The
other rivers in the region are the Sutlej and Tons. These rivers also
have stretches which can be run conveniently. Since these regions have
not yet been promoted, it will take some time for them to become
popular. There are no trek routes or places of tourist interest, which
have been developed in the region. Comparatively, therefore, the Kulu
valley and the Lahaul and Spiti valleys are more attractive for rafting.
However, it is advisable to contact the concerned state authorities before making travel plans.
